If port means hole, door, opening, etc., I can see the use of gunport, entry-port, observation-port, etc. butporthole seems to mean hole-hole or port-port. Maybe, instead of the meaning "hole" or...

WG:The boats referenced for starboard were pretty much made as a unit. What I mean is the rear doesn't look too different from the front (prow). Trying to work out the hinging required for a rudder...
